There lies the concept of the “15-minute city”, bringing all the necessities for comfortable living within 15 minutes by bike or on foot. The 15-Minute City is already in active development by urban planners in Portland, Bogota, Barcelona, Houston, Paris, Shanghai, Melbourne, and Ottawa.
This vision is especially relevant now, as cities confront climate change, lack of productivity due to commutes, and constant urbanization.
Studies show that this urban space structure will greatly favor the upcoming generations. Already today, each successive generation, starting with millennials (born between 1981 and 1996), is drastically reducing the need for private cars. Recent generations do not plan to obtain a driver’s license and generally prefer public transportation or more environmentally friendly commuting over the automobile.

However, the current structure of the roads is far from suitable for cyclists. And the main determinant required to solve this urban planning problem is data.
Moreover, at the moment, city planners have very limited to no knowledge about cyclists’ urban mobility. Most sports apps have access to the data of those who cycle for fitness and leisure purposes, and public transport services only focus on mobility within the public transport system. Meanwhile, those who prioritize cycling as their main daily mode of transport go undetected.
